Resource development distributes jobs, revenue, materials, risk, pollution, and power unevenly. Geographic perspective asks who decides, who benefits, who bears costs, and what evidence each claim uses.

Why We Develop Resources

The benefits are real

Resource development supports food, homes, transportation, medicine, communication, public revenue, and employment. Ignoring those benefits produces weak geography.

A mine can support direct jobs, suppliers, transport, local businesses, taxes, and exports. Forestry supplies housing and paper. Energy keeps hospitals, homes, factories, and data centres operating. Agriculture feeds people and supports communities.

Benefits multiply through an economy, but they are not evenly shared. Ownership, wages, contracts, taxes, location, and government policy affect who receives value. A region can export resources while local communities experience high costs or limited services.

Boomtowns can grow quickly when prices rise and struggle when prices fall or a deposit is exhausted. Housing, roads, schools, and health services must respond to unstable cycles.

The serious question is not ‘development or no development?’ It is what kind, at what scale, under whose authority, with which benefits, protections, and long-term plan.

Environmental Costs

The waste does not disappear when it leaves your screen

Resource impacts can be local, downstream, airborne, cumulative, delayed, and global. The map of costs is rarely identical to the map of benefits.

Land clearing fragments habitat. Mine waste can contaminate water. Fertilizer can create algal blooms. Fossil-fuel combustion contributes to climate change and air pollution. Plastics and metals continue into waste streams after products are used.

Cumulative effects matter when many projects affect the same watershed, migration route, forest, or community. A single development may appear manageable while the combined footprint crosses an ecological threshold.

The Alberta oil sands produce large quantities of energy and economic value. Extraction also disturbs land, uses and stores water, creates tailings, and contributes greenhouse-gas emissions. Different projects and technologies have different profiles; slogans erase that variation.

Before-and-after images are powerful but incomplete. They show visible land change, not automatically water chemistry, employment, health, consent, or future restoration. Use images with measurements and testimony.

The Athabasca oil-sands region lies in northeastern Alberta around Fort McMurray and the Athabasca River. Deposit, mineable-area, river, road, community, treaty, and ecosystem layers tell different parts of the story.

Communities, Land and Indigenous Perspectives

Rights, title, livelihood, and future

Indigenous peoples are not one stakeholder category. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis governments and communities have distinct territories, laws, rights, economies, priorities, and views.

Resource decisions may affect hunting, fishing, water, sacred and cultural places, travel routes, language, health, and local economies. These are current geographic relationships, not only historical traditions.

The Crown has constitutional duties to consult and, where appropriate, accommodate Indigenous peoples when decisions may affect asserted or established Aboriginal or treaty rights. The meaning of consent, authority, and jurisdiction remains central in many debates.

Communities may oppose a project, support it, negotiate conditions, seek ownership, or disagree internally. Indigenous-led development and Indigenous-led conservation both exist. Treating all Indigenous people as automatically anti-development is inaccurate and removes agency.

A strong inquiry begins with nation-specific sources: the affected Indigenous government, treaty or title context, community evidence, project documents, and independent environmental data. It does not use a generic quote to stand for everyone.

Competing Interests and Global Case Studies

The same resource can create a different conflict in every place

Global resource cases are not copies of one another. Geology, ecosystems, government, wealth, labour, rights, and markets produce different outcomes.

Cobalt from the Democratic Republic of the Congo is crucial to many batteries. Mining supports livelihoods and global technology, while parts of the sector face serious labour, safety, governance, and environmental problems. Industrial and artisanal mining must be distinguished.

Palm oil is highly productive and supports millions of livelihoods, but plantation expansion has contributed to tropical deforestation and peatland fires in parts of Southeast Asia. Certification and supply-chain rules aim to reduce harm, with mixed results.

Lithium from brines in the Andean ‘lithium triangle’ links energy transition to water use in arid Indigenous territories. The mineral can support lower-carbon technologies while creating local water, benefit-sharing, and consent conflicts.

Comparing cases prevents one easy story. ‘Green’ products still use land and minerals. ‘Development’ can reduce poverty and also deepen inequality. Better decisions require traceable supply chains, credible standards, enforcement, and local power.
